2. SB CAN Hires Associate Director, Olivia Uribe

We are very pleased to announce that Olivia Uribe will be joining SB CAN full-time as our Associate Director. She will assist Executive Director Deborah Brasket in day-to-day organizing efforts of the Santa Barbara County Action Network (SB CAN), an organization dedicated to establishing a progressive agenda for Santa Barbara County.

Olivia has demonstrated a commitment to progressive social and political causes. She graduated from UCSB with a B.A. in political science in 2006, and currently is pursuing a degree in law. While in college she studied political science abroad in China and Vietnam, and she was the Global Legislative Intern in Washington D.C. for RESULTS, a citizen’s advocacy group dedicated to ending hunger and poverty.

Most recently Olivia worked with Speak Out California, a non-profit progressive activist organization that seeks to influence state legislation through the internet. She has also served on the SB CAN board as Membership Committee Chair, and worked as a campaign assistant for the re-election of Margaret Connell on the Goleta City Council.

While both staff members will be active throughout the county, Olivia will be based on the south coast, maintaining our new office in Santa Barbara, while Deborah will be based in the north county. This way SB CAN will have an active presence across the county, helping to advocate on social justice and environmental issues.

Many thanks to the McCune Foundation and SBCORE for their Fall 2006 grant that allowed us to add staff in the north county, and for the 2007 capacity-building grant that will help us to continue our work educating the public about critical social justice and environmental issues.

4. Report on the North County Environmental Summit

On May 23, SB CAN hosted a "Northern Santa Barbara County Environmental Summit” in Orcutt. The purpose of this meeting was to bring together environmental groups and activists from across the region to examine some of the environmental challenges in northern Santa Barbara County, share information, and explore possibilities for working together.

Over two dozen community activists participated, who, along with facilitator George Relles, identified concerns and challenges, and brainstormed techniques and strategies for dealing with them.

Based on the group’s comments, the biggest challenges seem to be grouped into five areas:

1. Problems with local government, policies & procedures

2. Threats to/from natural resources

3. Oil Drilling and Contamination / Energy / Landfills

4. Housing / Sprawl

5. Threat to / from agriculture

6. Transportation

If you would like to be invited to the next environmental roundtable, contact SB CAN Executive Director, Deborah Brasket, at 722-5094 or Deborah@sbcan.org

At its annual meeting on June 9, Citizens Planning Association & Foundation presented awards to four honorees:
